Happy Tails
Jennifer - Happily Adopted!
Jennifer is one of seven breeder dogs who came to us after spending years making puppies. Jennifer was shy and took the longest of the dogs to gain confidence. Happily, she has now found her forever home where she will be loved and pampered!

Ranger - Happily Adopted!
Ranger was turned into our rescue with 6 other dogs by a breeder. This beautiful purebred Golden Retriever puppy was born with black markings on his ear and neck and the breeder referred to him as "defective." Six month old Ranger found his home with one of the vets who cared for him in the south. It was love at first sight and he'll live happily ever after now!!
Cooper - Happily Adopted!
Cooper has found his happily ever after home!
Macie Grey - Happily Adopted!
Macie Grey spent years living most of her time with a feral cat population. She was thin and sad, and infested with fleas. This brave dog had lost much of her coat and was very thin and dejected, and most likely lonely, but she carried on. Those days
are now behind her! Macie Grey is on her way to living her best life and has been Happily Adopted!
Benji - Happily Adopted!
Five year-old was turned into a shelter in AL with another dog when the former owners could no longer care for the dogs. He is a beautiful, red, purebred Golden Retriever who, as his breed name suggests, loves to retrieve! As a matter of fact, Lisa, our lead volunteer in AL, calls him a "retrieving fool!" Benji is a happy, happy boy with an energy level that is age-appropriate.
Bella - Happily Adopted!
Bella is an 8-year old, 45 lb. Lab mix whose human mom passed away. Bella lived with a doggie sister who has been adopted, and Bella has been looking for a family of her very own.
Bella has wonderful house manners, eating and sleeping well, and is fully house trained. She can be left home alone with no problems. Bella gets along well with everyone she meets, including kids. She has been working on her leash skills and, with the help of a harness and treats, she keeps improving.
Bella was recently adopted in FL!
Rupert - Happily Adopted!
Sweet Rupert was picked up as a stray in the Gulf area of AL. The shelter is overflowing with 200+ dogs and pleaded with local rescues to save as many lives as possible. We were happy to help with Rupert!
Rupert is the sweetest fellow you can imagine. He is happy to receive affection and is friendly to humans and other dogs. He is severely underweight from being out on his own and weighs only 32 lbs. He would do well at around 60 lbs. He came in with his fur terribly matted so he was shaved to free him from those uncomfortable tangles. We believe Rupert is about 1 year old and is likely a golden doodle. Like all young dogs, Rupert is an active boy and will do best with an active adopter; someone who will take him on long walks of jogging with them. He walks nicely on the leash and takes well to wearing a harness. He's a super sweet fellow as you can see in these videos:

Murphy - Happily Adopted!!
Marvelous Murphy came to our rescue after being adopted an older man and his wife. Owning smaller sized dogs, the wife was not ready for the happy-happy-joy energy of a healthy 18-month-old Golden Retriever so Murphy found his way to our rescue. In his first home this handsome honey lived with an 8-year-old Lab, while in the second home, he lived with a small dog.
Murphy weighs 60 lbs and has the build of what is known as a "field golden." He can use some more groceries in his tummy and would probably do well around 70 lbs. He is a very happy boy and he's pretty good on the leash. He loves attention, loves to play and fetch, and he loves toys. He has all the qualities that make Golden Retrieves so popular! Murphy is so very treat oriented which will aid in training him to become the wonderful companion he was meant to be. He does needs an active adopter because he is young, but think about the heads that will turn when they see you walking or jogging with this boy in the park.
Sweetie Pie - Happily Adopted!
Sweetie Pie is a young female, about 1-2 years old, who weighs 41 lbs. She looks like she may be a Beagle mix and has beautiful white and tan markings. Sweetie Pie loves to lay on the couch with or without her human friends; she is a lapdog who enjoys snuggling.
Henry - Happily Adopted!
Henry was picked up as a stray and brought to a shelter in Baton Rouge, LA in March, during the height of COVID-19 when the shelter was short-staffed. It saddens us to think that this sweet boy had spent so many months of his life in a shelter, but all of that is in his past!

Jack - Happily Adopted!
Jill - Happily Adopted!
God bless you for what you do. We are so thankful and love her so much already. She has a stuffed dog that she carries around like it’s a baby. She loves the kids and went for a run walk and starts her puppy training tomorrow. I clipped up her eye hair a little. She’s such a little proper girl.
Thank you again for making our lives more full!

SOPHIE - HAPPILY ADOPTED!
MAXX - HAPPILY ADOPTED!
BEAR - HAPPILY ADOPTED!
I have always lived with and loved dogs.
My senior rescue dog, Tipper, died last October. I am so grateful for the time we had together. He taught me so many things and we had great adventures.
Nine months have passed and I knew I needed to find another dog companion. So I started looking at rescue sites and shelters online. There are tons of sweet dogs waiting and waiting for their home. One face really stuck with me. It was Bear Bear.
Bear is everything I could have dreamed up in a dog. He is a gentle handsome loving guy and likes all people, cats and even my loud parrot.
We are just getting going on our journey together but I’m hoping for many many years of fabulous adventures together. Bear adapted right into our home life here like he had always been with us. What a sweetheart thank you to J and L Golden Retriever Rescue and to his foster parents, Cheryl and Paul.
Much Love & Hugs
(and some good treats)

BUDDIE - HAPPILY ADOPTED!
Buddy is a classic, sweet Golden Retriever who was turned into the Baldwin County Shelter when his family brought a human baby into their lives. Estimated to be 10-12 years old, this was a big change for gentle Buddy, but he took it all in stride. Buddy is overweight at about 86 lbs but is otherwise healthy. He tested Heartworm positive and needed to get through two months of slow treatment. During that time, a couple in the South heard about him and turned out to be perfect for Buddy in his retirement years.
Friendly, affectionate Buddy is making himself right at home getting lots of love and attention.
HOLLY - HAPPILY ADOPTED!
JESSE - HAPPILY ADOPTED!
Sweet little Jesse is a black and tan Dachshund (mix?) who is thought to be no more than 1 year old. She is buddies with Gus, another Dachshund-looking dog, who is being boarded and cared for at the same vet's office as she is. Jesse weighs about 21 lbs and has a gentle personality. While she is not as shy as some Karla's Kids are, she is a bit reserved until she gets to know you, but Jesse is becoming more and more used to being around people. Our photographer shared, "She didn’t want to leave my side. You could tell she wanted to get in your lap."
SCOTT- HAPPILY ADOPTED!
Scotty is the cutest little boy you could imagine. He weighs just 22 lbs and is estimated to be about 3 years old. He would be a great dog for just about anyone with his compact size. Oh, but don't let his size fool you, Scotty is HUGE in personality! Our volunteers cannot say enough positive things about this dog. He takes treats so gently that a toddler could give Scotty a treat without any worry.
Happily Adopted- Bruce & Stella! Bonded Pair
Blonde Bruce and Golden Stella are bonded purebred Goldens who are affectionate, sweet and bonded to each other. At only 8 years old they have plenty of spunk and fun in their personalities and are looking forward to the best years of their lives. Unfortunately Bruce has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Stella is doing great in her forever home.

Anya- Happily Adopted! Anya is a Yellow Lab mix who will grow up to be a beautiful and wonderful companion. She is calm for a 10 week-old puppy and is a pure delight! She is very happy and sweet. Anya has already established herself as a champion snuggler and lap dog! She amiable with other dogs, and would probably be fine growing up with cats and kids. She is ready to learn all about life.
Julius- Handsome boy- Happily Adopted! He is a handsome male retriever mix. He weighs about 40 lbs, is beyond sweet, great with other dogs, and just a love! He was picked up as a stray but found to be micro-chipped. Sadly, his family did not come to claim him. But that was Julius' lucky day as he is now in our care. Julius is neutered and micro-chipped. He will be ready for his forever home as soon as he completes heartworm treatment. |
Shadow- Happily Adopted!
Moe- Happily Adopted!
Goliath, Buster, & Sarah are a trio of Golden mixes who were turned into a shelter in Louisiana by the owner of the pups' mother.

Rosa's Rescue
On November 20th, we lost our forever foster girl, Rosa. She has crossed The Bridge and is running free and without pain. Foster parents Cheryl and Paul, along with resident dog Mae, gave Rosa a wonderful three months filled with love. During that time Rosa was a Sunshine ambassador, helping other foster dogs who stayed with Cheryl. Rosa was truly home and, although her time there was short, she was happy and knew what it felt like to be a much-loved dog.
Sunshine is so grateful to Cheryl and Paul, and to our foster families who give so much of themselves to help homeless dogs like Rosa. To those of you in Sunshine’s family who sent in donations toward Rosa’s care—you all played a part in Rosa’s happy final months, and we thank you. We will never forget you, Rosa!
*****************************************************
Sometimes a dog gets to us just in time to break our hearts. Rosa was a 7 year-old stray in a hot Louisiana shelter that had no air conditioning. We took her into Sunshine as soon as we had space in our rescue and straight she went to the vet's office. We had been told she had a scratch on her ear - but it was not a scratch, it was a cancerous growth. We had pre-op X-rays done to prepare for her surgery only to be told that cancer had already spread to her lungs. We were then told that Rosa has about three months left in this world before she crosses the Bridge. We hope it will be longer.
Rosa is very special. If we could have found her a forever adoptive home, her adopter would be getting a beautiful soul of a dog. She is gentle, affectionate and easy-going. She is pretty with doe-like brown eyes that look straight into you with trust. Rosa loves other dogs and people and she would have brought much happiness as a terrific family pet.
Although that can never be, Rosa has still found happiness. She is staying for her remaining time with a kind and loving foster. Rosa will have her foster mom’s company most of the day, along with kitty friends and two resident dogs. She has toys and a fenced yard and car rides. She has lots of treats and great dinners! Rosa doesn’t know her time is short and she is enjoying every day, being spoiled and showered with attention.
We are posting Rosa’s story so that you will know about her, along with the other dogs in Sunshine who will find their adoptive homes. Thank you for reading this, and for caring about rescue dogs in need.

Chance, therapy dog
Adopted in 2002, God had called Chance to heaven on December 13, 2014. It was time for him to go take care of the residents from the nursing home facilities that he visited over ten years. Are they going to be glad to see him. Chance was a gift from God making everyone smile that he was with. He loved working with the special children with all the hugging and petting he received from them.
Chance fulfilled my life for the past 12 years. He helped me get though Katrina and the stroke I had 4 years ago.
Rest in peace my sweet and beloved Chance.
